What copyediting covers

Depending on what you need, we work at three levels: standard, extended, and premium. Every level includes full proofreading and a check that names and terms are used consistently throughout. We make changes wherever the language calls for them, and we leave questions of substance to you.

  1. Standard

    Full proofreading

We always start with a detailed check of spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Consistency in names, notes, and bibliography

We check that proper names and terms are correct throughout the document. We fit the notes and bibliography to your publisher’s requirements.

  2. Extended

    Everything in standard, plus

    Checking clarity

From the extended level up, we also look at how clear the argument is and how readable the language. Along the way we correct the slips typical of non-native speakers of English.

    Native-speaker review

At the extended and premium levels, the text is also checked by an editor who is a native speaker of English.

  3. Premium

    Everything in extended, plus

    Sentence length and terminology

We even out sentence length so the text reads at a steady pace. We also check that each scholarly term is the one your field uses and that it fits where you use it.

    Quotations checked against the source

We look up the works you quote and check the wording and the page numbers against the published text, then fit each reference to your bibliography.

Composition and the logic of the argument

We check that the argument holds together from the first page to the last. We suggest how to arrange sections and paragraphs, and where the text needs it, we recommend far-reaching changes to its structure.

This attitude was undoubtedly influenced by the timing of the discipline’'s emergence: the disintegration of the old, agricultural-based feudal order and the birth of the new, industrially related-oriented industrial capitalist order. As Jurgen Habermas writes, ote, "sociology stands up as a theory of bourgeois society; its task is to explain the course and anomic forms of manifestation of capitalist modernization of pre-bourgeois societies"“Sociology arose as the theory of bourgeois society; to it fell the task of explaining the course of the capitalist modernization of traditional societies and its anomie side effects” (Habermas 198599: 25xiii).

What our Authors say

I would like to thank Mowa, who earned my trust over nearly ten years of editing articles for the English-language journals Central European Management Journal, Tamara: Journal for Critical Organization Inquiry, and Collective and Individual Decisions, published by Kozminski University. Mowa’s editorial work to raise the quality of the texts in Central European Management Journal contributed significantly to the journal’s indexing in Scopus and Web of Science, and even to its inclusion in the Academic Journal Guide of the Chartered Association of Business Schools. Likewise, their editorial work helped the quarterly Tamara gain indexing in Scopus. I rate our collaboration very highly, not only in terms of Mowa’s adherence to the highest editorial standards, but also for their reliability and punctuality.

Anna Goryńska Managing Editor, Central European Management Journal, Tamara: Journal for Critical Organization Inquiry, and Collective and Individual Decisions

For five years Mowa has edited all kinds of texts across my successive research projects, and I truly cannot imagine better work from a copyeditor. Mowa has an excellent feel for form, reads closely, and catches theoretical nuance. They pick up stylistic errors and awkwardness, and also the elliptical shortcuts and the repetitions in an argument. Their comments enrich the texts enormously.

Marta Bucholc Professor, University of Warsaw

A good translation of scholarly work calls for more than fluency in a foreign language. It calls for command of scholarly craft, familiarity with the discourses of contemporary humanities, sensitivity to shades of meaning, and inventiveness in solving problems of terminology. Mowa has mastered this precarious art. Working with them produced an excellent result, and the collaboration itself turned out to be a small intellectual adventure.

Working with the translators at Mowa, who translated and copyedited my monograph into English, went perfectly in every respect. They showed great sensitivity to the subtleties of literary language and a sure grasp of the methodologies of contemporary humanities. The translation was delivered on time, and a foreign reviewer of my book praised the quality of its English.

Ewa Kobyłecka-Piwońska Associate Professor, University of Łódź

I have had the opportunity and the pleasure of working with Mowa several times, on translation, proofreading, and copyediting for projects in literary studies. Every time I met with complete professionalism, the work always ran on schedule, and every part of it was carried out perfectly. Literary scholarship on nineteenth-century culture has its own character and demands a particular terminology, and historical context matters in it as well. Mowa translated and copyedited two of my monographs, and also made them easier to read for audiences outside the Polish-speaking world, so that those readers could properly understand descriptions of works and phenomena that are central to Polish literature but opaque outside it.

Maciej Junkiert Professor, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań

I would like to underline the professionalism of Mowa, its reliability and its punctuality, which matters today because publishers hold us authors to deadlines too. Another important quality of the people there is the courtesy with which they work. I would like to thank Mowa for a wonderful collaboration. I recommend them, and I recommend Mowa, a company that puts weight on thorough, expert service, on honesty, and on a very high standard of work. They approach every client individually, because scholarly work is itself specific and original. I warmly encourage you to work with them.

Helena Krasowska Professor, Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences

I hold Mowa’s translation work in very high regard. That applies to the linguistic quality of the translation as much as to the erudition with which they settle a translated and copyedited text into its new textual and cultural surroundings, a task that often goes well beyond a translator’s duties. Add to this their scrupulous punctuality and their excellent, businesslike contact with the author, and you come close to a portrait of the specialist translator as an ideal made flesh. I offer these words of appreciation on the basis of my own experience of Mowa’s work on my book, and also on the strength of the favorable reports that have reached me about the work of Mowa on books published in Cross-Roads: Studies in Culture, Literary Theory, and History, the Peter Lang series I edit.

Ryszard Nycz Professor, Jagiellonian UniversityCulture as Verb. Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang Verlag, 2022.

Working with Mowa went smoothly and reliably in every respect. Every stage of the collaboration, on the business side and on the substantive side alike, I would describe as highly professional. I appreciate how they treat a client, how well they communicate, and how closely they involve themselves in the translation process. I also rate highly their punctuality, their subject expertise, and their care for linguistic nuance in the translated and copyedited text. I intend to entrust further translations to Mowa.

Mirosław Karwat, Filip Pierzchalski, Marcin Tobiasz Professor; Associate Professor; PhDConstituents of Political Theory: Selected Articles of the Warsaw School of Political Theory. Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang Verlag, 2021.

I am very pleased with my collaboration with Mowa. My book was translated and copyedited soundly, with a feel for form and a care for linguistic nuance. On the practical side, what sets the company apart is its individual approach to the author and the text, and its punctuality. A further strength is the high quality of its English.

Paweł Smoleń Professor, The John Paul II Catholic University of LublinConditions of Agricultural Activity in Poland: A Fiscal and Legal Study. Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang Verlag, 2020.

I worked with Mowa on the translation of a literary study of Czesław Miłosz’s work. Besides the good rapport between us, I valued their efficiency and their professionalism.

Tomasz Garbol Associate Professor, The John Paul II Catholic University of LublinAfter the Fall: The Works of Czesław Miłosz. Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang Verlag, 2020.

I am fully satisfied with my collaboration with Mowa on the translation of my book On an Electric Arc: Andrzej Bobkowski Writing. The translators have experience with texts in the humanities, and particularly in Polish philology and comparative literature. Their competent translation came with a sure grasp of the state of research and with proper use of existing English translations of Polish literature. The collaboration itself went very well, which is how we arrived at happy solutions to the difficult and problematic points.

Maciej Nowak Associate Professor, The John Paul II Catholic University of LublinOn an Electric Arc: Andrzej Bobkowski Writing. Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang Verlag, 2020.

Translation is a procedure in which the author of the original hands part of his authority to someone else. Working with Mowa keeps down the risk that the translation will take something away from the original, or that the translator will dominate the author and take excessive power over the text. I trusted them completely. I would not hesitate to entrust my texts to them again.

Wojciech Tomasik Professor, Kazimierz Wielki University in BydgoszczInsane Run: Railroad and Dark Modernity. Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang, 2019.

I worked with Mowa on the English version of my book for Peter Lang. They handled the translation and the initial editing before the book went to typesetting at Peter Lang. The collaboration was fully professional. Every deadline was met, during the translation and during the later proofreading. My own later corrections were taken into account as well. Not once was a new version of the text delayed. The text was approved after only minor proofreading corrections from the English editor at Peter Lang. I also received help with the organizational and financial side, with the settlement for the whole job. Only the substance was left to me. Overall I judge my collaboration with Mowa to have been fully satisfactory and professional.

Ryszard Kaczmarek Professor, University of Silesia in KatowicePoles in the Kaiser’s Army: On the Front of the First World War. Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang, 2019.

Mowa is a guarantee of professionalism: Routledge took the translation essentially without corrections. The work went efficiently, on time, and pleasantly on a human level. As an author you can forget about the drudgery of formatting notes and bibliography, or hunting for quotations in the English editions of the books you cite. Clear answers to the doubts that come up for those of us who speak conference English. I recommend them.

Tomasz Żukowski PhD, Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of SciencesForgetting Polish Violence Against the Jews: The Great Whitewash. London: Routledge, 2024.

I worked with Mowa on the translation of my book Pragmatism and Radical Liberalism: A Study of John Dewey’s Political Thought. They prepared a professional translation, and they also helped with the letter of proposal and with the correspondence with the publisher. I am convinced the book would never have appeared without that support. As for the translation itself, it is of a very high order. Their individual approach to the author and the text took me pleasantly by surprise. The people at Mowa are open to corrections and changes that bring the translation closer to the author’s intentions and stylistic preferences. In sum, I recommend working with Mowa without reservation, for their punctuality, their expertise, and their individual support in what is, after all, a difficult undertaking: translating a scholarly book.

Maciej Kassner PhD, University of WarsawPragmatism and Radical Liberalism: A Study of John Dewey’s Political Thought. Leiden: Brill, 2025.

I want to thank Mowa once again, most warmly, for a crystal-clear and precise translation. It gives me particular satisfaction that when I read the English version I hear my own voice in it, my rhythm, the logic of my sentences. Great respect, and hats off. 🙂

What is the difference between copyediting and proofreading?

Proofreading covers grammar, punctuation, spelling, and publishing format. Copyediting takes in all of that and goes further: we check your scholarly terminology and the internal consistency of the argument, and above all we work to make every word sound natural to an English-speaking reader.

Can I get a quote for proofreading?

We offer several options, so the best thing is to talk about what you actually need. Proofreading and copyediting get confused with each other. We usually recommend copyediting, because most word processors already handle English spelling and punctuation well enough. To match different needs we run three levels: standard, extended, and premium copyediting. Tell us the length of your text and what you want done with it, and we will send you a quote.

How long does copyediting take?

Extended copyediting of an article normally takes 5 working days, counting from the day after you confirm the order. Longer texts, such as chapters or whole monographs, take proportionally longer. If you need it sooner, talk to us. Large projects leave more room to adjust the schedule.

How many people work on my text?

Two, whichever level you choose. At the standard level, two copyeditors. From the extended level up, the second reader is an editor who is a native speaker of English.

Do I have a say in the text? Can I submit corrections?

Of course. However, we do ask that the material you send for copyediting is final, and that you raise corrections and additions once we hand the work back, rather than while it is in progress.

What if the publisher or journal raises language issues?

We guarantee that we look after the language of your text to the end. 99% of the texts we have edited were accepted with no comment on the language. In the rare cases where a publisher or journal did raise a language issue, we copyedited the text again straight away, within the original order and at our own cost, and the revised text drew no further comments.

Can we settle payment before the work is done?

Yes. We accept advance payments, and we can almost always find an arrangement that fits how you need to handle the billing.
